Firefox 4 Beta 8 is Getting Better and Better

Although Mozilla still hasn’t officially announced the latest beta release of its upcoming Firefox 4, it has been available for download for almost day now. Behind schedule, even the revised one, Firefox 4 Beta 8 comes with quite a lot of bug-fixes, as the focus was on polishing, but also with better Sync support, a refreshed Add-On Manager and improved WebGL support.

Firefox 4 Beta 7 was feature complete, so don’t expect anything new in the latest release. However, there are some interesting updates in there and Firefox 4 is looking a lot better than when the first beta was made available.

Google has just announced that WebGL support is enabled by default in the Chrome 9 Beta. It has been available in Firefox 4 Beta for quite a while, but it is now getting better with most Windows and Mac users able to make the best of what the 3D web promises. Linux users, unfortunately, will have to wait some more.

The new Sync interface makes it easier than ever to bring Firefox with you anywhere you go, whether you’re on your desktop, laptop or your mobile phone. Sync started out as a Mozilla Labs experiment and evolved to the point where it could be part of the browser. Sync has been built into Firefox 4 from the get-go, but the experience has improved quite a bit since.

“The Firefox Add-ons Manager now looks and feels more polished compared to the first beta release, with automatic add-on updates and a smarter interface that makes it even easier to manage your add-ons and discover awesome new options for personalizing the way you browse,” Mozilla added.

The new in-tab add-on manager has been introduced in Firefox 4 as an alternative to the dialog-based one in Firefox 3 and previous versions. While the idea was solid, to move the configuration windows to the browser itself, it felt a bit unpolished and needed some work.

Mozilla still hasn’t made any announcement, but you can grab Firefox 4 Beta 8 from the download links below. There are a couple of more betas expected, with the next one coming in early 2011, and then a couple of release candidate so don’t expect Firefox 4 final to land until spring 2011.

WordPress Updates for BlackBerry and Android

Recently WordPress blogging tool for mobile phones has been updated. BlackBerry and Android platforms received new versions with mainly bug fixes. The latest 1.4.1 release for BlackBerry addresses some bugs encountered by users, such as the empty title issue for blogs with the “Site Title” field set to an empty value, a problem in the comments screen that didn’t allow editing of comments with special characters within the URL or e-mail field, as well as other minor bugs. Also, the update also delivers a better integration with the VideoPress service and the WordPress.com Space-Upgrade option, as well as support for the blog shortcut icon.

The Android build, now at version 1.3.5, has a longer change list, including: more stable preview of blog posts, a fix regarding multi-language support which made long strings of text break the interface, a patch for an issue which caused the option to turn off the Mobile Theme to randomly disappear, and another one for the occasional adding of random extra paragraph HTML tags when editing a blog post.

Furthermore, the update deals with two crashes which occurred when working with very large images of over 8Mb, and when switching the data connection type during a process (e.g. switching from WiFi to 3G). Apart from these fixes, the release also makes it easier for users to deal with comments. Newly added feature makes the actual text of new comments appear in the Android notification bar.

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.

Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters – A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person’s file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).

feel bad about dreadful hosting

Early morning last Saturday, I realized that some of wiffy’s blogs were suspended. Of course, the initial reaction is panic. But, she remained calm and thought about what happened. Then, she realized it was her hosting provider who suspends her account due to high CPU usage. We thought its “unlimited,” how come she is only allowed to use 10%. It’s really frustrating and we feel really bad towards just host.

Of course, part of it is our mistake as we did not read the terms and conditions. But, the biggest mistake is luring us about the “unlimited” marketing strategy. If it is stated in the advertising that we are only allowed to use up to a certain amount, then we could have done something to avoid it. Other than that there is no way to know how much CPU usage we are using. We can’t monitor our resource usage consumption. Good thing everything is back to normal now.

After the incident, wiffy loses some heart in blogging. She instantly wants to find a job that doesn’t require her to think deeply. Actually, she was forced to read and research things that are really new to her like php configuration and so on. It took her a little while before crying. She said “my brain is going to explode,” and “I don’t understand this.” But, after a while she was able to get over it and successfully managed to reduce her resource usage.

Now she is online again. Still, she is looking for another job in a company beyond site where vacancies are posted every now and then.
