Set your mind as ease as Sony has announced today its very first waterproof Cyber-shot digital camera, namely the TX5, a super slim camera that also sports shock and freeze proofing. The company was expected to unveil such a camera, as most of the other major digital camera manufacturers launched at least one shockproof, waterproof, freeze-proof, as well as whole lineup in some cases.
Not only did Sony unveil its first waterproof digital camera, but it also claimed the worlds smallest and thinnest model, given the Cyber-shot TX5 is only 17.7mm slim, but mentioning it’s the smallest to also sport optical image stabilization. If that is more inclined to the marketing branch, then the technical details on proofing are quite nice – users can submerge the TX5 down to 3 meters in water for as long as 60 minutes, compared to the common 2 meters for 30 minutes in the competition, while the shock proofing will allow the camera to survive dropping from 1.5 meters.
Resolution tops at 10.2 effective megapixels, but even if the sensor is quite small, noise is well handled by the Exmor R CMOS sensor, while the 4x optical zoom extends the 25mm wide-angle to a more portrait-inclined focal length. Hitting the shelved this April, the new Sony Cyber-shot TX5 DSC will sport a price of $350.
