Online Money Mistake

online-money-mistakeTo cut mailing costs, some banks are encouraging cardholders to receive their monthly account statement via email. But while it’s tempting to take the paperless plunge (goodbye, overstuffed file drawer, in this case, it may pay to be old-fashioned.

You may confuse your legitimate online statements with the bogus emails sent out by online scammers known as phishers. They design emails to look like official business from banks and other institution, hoping that you’ll answer their questions and supply them with your financial information. Then the scammers set up fraudulent accounts or, worse, steal your identity. Anyone can fall a victim to a phisher, but receiving credit card statements can create other headaches as well. Some spam filters, for instance, will mistake bank messages for junk and discard them. You could lose track of payment due dates and end up having to pay late fees. When it comes to certain paper work, stick to, well, paper.

We tried doing our phone, and utilities online. It was a major pain, as far as forgetting, and they do not send you a statement. Why would they, they get to charge late fees, we did not do it for long. I would never pay credit cards online, nor do we do any online banking.

I am the complete opposite of Melissa. I do everything online, it’s much easier and convenient. All my statement are electronically archived, which allows me to go back through them. And yes, people with old fashion paper bills can do the same, but keeping years worth of bills in paper format is just a mess.

If you are going to be handling finances online, then perhaps you should become computer literate and start understand phishing scams. As far as late payments, set aside time twice a month to pay bills if you don’t know how to set alerts or time sensitive tasks on the computer.
