Latest Anti-Virus Rankings

This is based on the latest report from AV-Comparatives and compares the most popular antiviruses available to the market. AV-Comparatives is a Non-Profit-Organization that tests mainly on behalf of the vendors, but also (very rarely) for third-parties.

Anti-Virus products always claim to have high proactive detection capabilities- far higher than those based on this report. AV-Comparatives aims to show how good the proactive detection capabilities of the scanners were in detecting actual new threats.

The following antivirus softwares were tested and ranked:

  1. avast! Professional Edition 4.7
  2. AVG Anti-Malware 7.5
  3. AVIRA AntiVir Personal Edition Premium 7.06
  4. BitDefender Antivirus 2008 11.0
  5. eScan Anti-Virus 9.0
  6. ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus 3.0
  7. F-Secure Anti-Virus 2008 8.0
  8. G DATA AntiVirusKit (AVK) 2008 18.0
  9. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.1
  10. McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 12.0
  11. Microsoft OneCare 2.0
  12. Norman SS Antivirus & Anti-Spyware 7.0
  13. Sophos Anti-Virus 7.0
  14. Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2008 15.0
  15. TrustPort Antivirus Workstation 2.8.0
  16. VBA32 Scanner for Windows 3.12.6

So far this is the clear statistical data and comparison based on categorical testing to rank the most popular Anti-Viruses in terms of how effective it can be to help prevent/detect your computer from infections. The latest report (May 2008) is attached below.

For those of you who are too lazy to view the report, here are the summary results based on Retrospective/ProActive Test conducted by AV-Comparatives:

  • Advanced+ (Top ranked) : Avira & NOD 32
  • Advanced : AVG, McAfee, Microsoft, AVK
  • Standard : Bitdefender, Norman , Avast, Kaspersky, VBA32, Symantec
  • No Certification (Lowest ranked) : Sophos, F-Secure, Trustport, eScan

I was very much surprised by Avira’s capabilities as I have been only using it for 3 weeks (free version). I was also surprised to know that Avira has one, if not the highest, detection rates of all anti-virus softwares available. All I can say is the free version works with the same effectiveness as with the retail version of its counterparts. Its only backdown is during virus update, there is a pop-up Avira advert but its a bargain for the kind of protection provided!.

I don’t see the attachment. Did they include Trend Micro products in their review? I use NOD32, but I have Trend installed elsewhere due to a really cheap price I can get through work.
